Match report,
Athy V Raheens Senior League Div 1, Round 6 01/05/2024
Geraldine Pk, Athy 8.30pm
On May Day, the young guns of Raheens travelled to Athy to face the formidable opponents in red and white. Positioned 3rd and 4th in the league table respectively after last week's matches, both teams were eager to secure a victory.
Athy set the pace early on with two quick points within the first few minutes, courtesy of Liam McGovern and Conor Kelly. Raheens responded swiftly when Jack Taaffe found the back of the net, following a missed free. However, Athy's John Moran narrowed the gap with a point shortly after. Raheens then capitalized with two consecutive points from Jack Taaffe and Fionn Cooke, establishing a three-point lead twelve minutes into the game.
Conor Doyle of Athy and Jack Taaffe exchanged points before Darren Lawlor and David Hyland added to Athy's tally. Raheens' Jack Taaffe continued his scoring streak with two more points, one from a free kick. A missed free from Raheens' goalkeeper, David McPartlin, halted their momentum, allowing Athy's John Moran to secure another point. The teams exchanged further points through a series of frees, with Conor Doyle, Liam McGovern, and Jack Taaffe contributing to the scoreline.
At halftime, the teams were deadlocked, with Raheens on 1-6 and Athy on 0-9.
Raheens made a substitution at halftime, bringing on Killian Thompson for Fionn Cooke. Athy started the second half strong, adding three quick points from Liam McGovern and Conor Kelly. Raheens' Conor Kelly responded with two points of his own, followed by a free from Jack Taaffe, maintaining the level playing field eight minutes into the second half.
However, Athy surged ahead, with Michael Spillane, John Moran, and a substitute adding points from play. Raheens attempted to slow Athy's momentum with substitutions, but Athy's relentless attack resulted in seven unanswered points. A late consolation point from Jack Taaffe brought the final score to Athy 0-23, Raheens 1-13.
Despite a valiant effort from Raheens, Athy's dominant second-half performance secured them the victory.
